Saving lives with Thon worth more than sports

In response to Benjamin Praster's comments about how Penn State sports are bigger than the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon ("Sports more important to university than Thon," Feb. 24), I would like to say that you are absolutely correct. There are more people at a single Penn State football game than there are in the stands at any time during Thon.

However, I have a question for you. Why did you feel it was so necessary to point that out? What are you getting out of your attempt to trivialize the countless hours of work done by thousands of students on this campus? As far as your definition of size goes ("Penn State's athletic department spends $54 million a year"), how about measuring in lives saved? Someday, I would like to introduce you to Jordan, my organization's Thon child. He has been in remission for the past seven years, thanks in part to all the people involved in Thon. By my calculations, his life is worth far more than any athletic event. You might not agree. But in any case, I would appreciate Praster directing his efforts toward something other than belittling our attempts to do some good in this world.
