Lady Lions' Mazzante honored by Post-Gazette
Penn State women's basketball player Kelly Mazzante was honored as the 2003 Sportswoman of the Year at an awards dinner Saturday, hosted by Dapper Dan Charities.
Mazzante won the honor after Pittsburgh Post-Gazette readers voted for the Lady Lions' senior basketball player online through a poll on the newspaper's website.
Last year Mazzante led the Lady Lions to their second straight Sweet Sixteen NCAA Tournament appearance. She led the Big Ten Conference in scoring for an unprecedented third straight year at 23.9 points per game, and became the first Lady Lion to be named a two-time Kodak All-American. This year the senior shooting guard has led the Big Ten Conference for much of the year in scoring and currently averages 21.1 points per game. Earlier this year, Mazzante became the all-time leading scorer in Big Ten conference history, eclipsing the mark of 2,613 points previously held by Indiana's Calbert Cheaney. She is a top candidate for the WBCA Wade Trophy, given annually to the top women's basketball player in the country as voted by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
