However, the weekend didn't start out as promising as anticipated.
Friday night saw the Icers play their sloppiest hockey since their two losses to Ohio back in early January. Battista said seniors Curtiss Patrick, Jack Weber and Glenn Zuck all took bad retaliation penalties.
Despite the bad penalties, Penn State jumped out to an early lead with a goal by forward Greg Windsor. The Presidents tied the game at one before the Icers got goals from both forward Kevin Jaeger and defenseman Joe Maglaque. Jaeger's goal was his 100th of his career at Penn State.
"[Scoring that first goal] was really important," Zuck said. "The first period we didn't bury some chances. We needed that first goal to get the momentum going."
Washington & Jefferson tried to fight its way back into the game after it cut the lead to 3-2, but the Icers pulled away as two goals from the stick of forward Mike Carrano gave them a 5-2 win.
"We started out slow," Penn State forward Garrett Divins said. "We didn't play as hard as we should have because the rankings were already out. But we needed to use [this weekend] as a tune up and not take it for granted."
Saturday, Penn State looked like it got the message from Friday night's game. Behind the "We are ... Penn State" chants at a sold out Iceoplex in Washington, Pa., the Icers came out hot, jumping out to an early lead when Jaeger scored just five minutes into the first.
The Presidents wouldn't give up that easily as they answered back with a goal from forward Bob Rose just three minutes later.
The second period saw a revived Penn State team step onto the ice. The power play that seemed to have fallen into a coma the past few weeks finally woke up from its sleep.
Scoring two power play goals in the second and adding another in the third, it is apparent that the power play units are clicking once again. They went 3-for-5 on the day after going 0-for-4 Friday.
