Scholarship supporters need more information

It seems that Jason Mattera, Richard Pastena and the handful of other supporters of the white-only scholarship forgot to do some research ("White-only scholarship given in Rhode Island," Feb. 19). Some people seem confused about the current definition of "affirmative action." Just to clear things up, the Supreme Court's decision this past summer prohibits any use of affirmative action in order to "redress past discrimination." The only use of affirmative action currently permitted by law is to "promote diversity."

Race is just one factor, along with plenty of others, that a person cannot change about him or herself that may be used in selection. If Mattera, Pastena or anyone else wants to get really upset, maybe they should check out some of the scholarships available for only little people, tall people, twins, left-handed people or people with the last name Scarpinato.

Yes, all of these exist. And as a matter of fact, I'm thinking about making my own scholarship for non-twin, right-handed, tall people. Join me in protest.
