Borough over budget on parking deck repair

State College Borough Council heard proposals regarding repairs at two downtown parking garages with costs estimated at $60,000 over budget.

The Pugh and Fraser street parking garages' repair cost is estimated to be $367,000.

The cost proposal won't be finished until May.

Repairs for the Pugh Street garage include replacing a concrete support slab, which all vehicles must drive over if they are above the ground floor of the parking deck. A port tensioning tendon snapped, which caused the need for additional support provided by surrounding port jacks. As a result, between six and eight parking spaces have been closed as a precautionary measure.

Because of costs and the Pugh Street garage damage, council decided to postpone façade repairs on the Fraser Street garage.

Parking and facilities coordinator Ed Holmes said repairs will take place, although no immediate threats to safety exist.

"There's no danger ... but there' s no warm and fuzzy feelings when you drive past," Holmes said.
