Readers respond to yesterday’s article about ‘white-only’ scholarship
I praise the actions of Roger Williams University College Republicans in creating a white-only scholarship ("White-only scholarship given in Rhode Island," Feb. 19). It may seem racist or discriminatory on the surface, but in reality, if it is acceptable for any other group or organization to grant scholarships based on race, why is it not acceptable for the implementation of equal initiatives for whites? If it is not racist for a Native American or African-American scholarship, then it would seem in a nation that strives for equality that it is not racist to also have a white-only scholarship. Hopefully, this scholarship will demonstrate the reality that affirmative action only promotes discrimination. Despite what some individuals believe, there are white people out there that need and deserve the same accommodations and privileges made for minorities in attending college. Charles Buchanan
