NEWS

A national survey released recently by the Harvard School of Public Health links binge drinking with rape on college campuses.

A recent study showed that Pennsylvania ranks second highest among all states for average amount of tuition and fees per student in state-funded four-year colleges and universities.

A new group of students is being established as a replacement for the Elected Student Leaders board to advise the vice president of student affairs, Vicky Triponey.

Recent heavy storms at Penn State have caused new concerns for safety around campus as unusually large amounts of snow accumulated on the roofs of buildings.

Attorneys representing S.C. Sun Corp. in a lawsuit that alleges the company withheld security deposits from former tenants filed a preliminary objection yesterday morning.

A judge dropped a charge of attempted murder against a State College man yesterday and bound him over on lesser charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment.

Today, one lucky student at Rhode Island's Roger Williams University will win a scholarship. The requirements do not include a 4.0 grade point average or a long list of accomplishments, but applicants do have to be white.

A State College woman reported she was indecently assaulted by a man early Tuesday morning.

A staff member in the department of horticulture reported that a university vehicle was taken from the parking lot at Headhouse II Tuesday afternoon, according to Penn State University Police.

Last Monday, Brown University students were introduced to WonderPizza, a vending machine that bakes pizzas in less than two minutes.

Fran Ganter, the longest tenured of Joe Paterno's assistants, will not be the man to inherit the Penn State football team.

At a press conference yesterday announcing several changes in the football staff, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno said quarterback Michael Robinson was a victim in the Feb. 7 fight at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion.

For those who have never been a dancer in the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, it can be an exciting but scary experience.

SPORTS

A new season is supposed to bring with it the experience gained from the year before. However, the Penn State softball team won't be so fortunate this year as only two starters from last season will be assuming their familiar position on the diamond.

For the Penn State softball team, a solid pitching lineup has been the staple of a winning team for the past several years. This year is to be no different, that is if several players' injuries heal in a hurry.

The season ended bitterly for three Penn State wrestlers yesterday at the hands of their own teammates.

An overhaul, to say the least.

It was during the mid-summer's lull in Penn State athletics when some unexpected and unwelcome news flew into the face of the Penn State women's basketball program.

For the second year in a row, Penn State started the Big Ten women's swimming and diving championships with a bang.

There have been some bumps and turns along the winding road known to new Penn State offensive coordinator Galen Hall.

Former Penn State standout quarterback Mike McQueary has inherited the position of wide receivers' coach and recruiting coordinator.

The Maize Rage was out in full force.

With 19 seconds remaining, the margin of error was just two points. Two more points for the Badgers on Jan. 11, and the No. 7 Penn State women's basketball team (19-4, 11-1 Big Ten) would have suffered its first loss in the Big Ten while on the road at Wisconsin (8-14, 2-10).

Penn State's Kelly Mazzante was named as one of 20 finalists for the 2004 Naismith Player of the Year Award.

Break out the beads, and find a Bourbon Street.

Brendan Bayliss, guitarist and vocalist for Chicago-based jam band Umphrey's McGee, is thankful for the sobriety of his fans.

Bold and beautiful color will dance along violin strings and across piano keys into the hearts of audience members at 3 p.m. Saturday as the Nittany Valley Symphony (NVS) performs a family concert at State College Area High School.

Low-key student hangout by day, acoustic entertainment venue by Friday and Saturday nights: The new location of Joegies is a versatile hotspot that still serves up its trademark Big Ten hoagies ... and then some.

"We got a minivan, and everyone thinks we have lots of children for some reason," Eric Himan said, as his manager and best friend Cassandra Buncie worked on parking the vehicle in a tight space in Chicago.

Everyone has witnessed this sort of play -- humdrum, unoriginal, telling the same static story of creation, right?

The last known whereabouts of "the last rock band" Marah, as stated by songwriter Dave Bielanko before his phone cut out, suggest the group is "rolling towards Chicago."

There's a new voice and venue for hip-hop around State College, and it goes by the name of Audio Imagery Inc. (AI). The organization will be hosting its first event at 9 tonight at the Tall Shiva Hookah Lounge, 224 W. College Ave.

After spending five and a half semesters milking every cent of the "A La Board" meal plan, I consider myself sort of a dining commons connoisseur. I know every inch of Penn State's on-campus eateries, from the halls of Findlay to the soups under Pattee.

One hundred years ago, the Wright brothers taught the world to fly.

I'm not even close to being the Smashing Pumpkins' No. 1 fan.

The bad news is we have to wait till April now for the second installment of Kill Bill.

Performance of any kind can be difficult. It takes guts to get up in front of people, and when performers are anxious about who might be in the audience, that stress can be even greater.

Lunchbox or Bach's Lunch? Or maybe a combination of the two sounds appetizing?

Influential rock artist Prince will perform 8 p.m. April 18 at the Bryce Jordan Center.
