High tuition and low state appropriations are two conditions that have become normal at Penn State in recent years. Whether a student takes a private loan, applies for scholarships or finds a part-time job, the burden of replacing funds rests on our shoulders.
What if we could do something about it? As a student body and a constituency of Centre County, say enough is enough. Allocation of state appropriations to Penn State do not meet the needs of the students and this university, and the state's duty toward higher education is unfulfilled. It is our responsibility to work toward greater appropriations, not only for our own benefit but for future Penn Staters. We are united by the issue of funding. However, unity alone will not provide results. We must educate ourselves on tuition and state appropriations.
Utilize this foundation through registering to vote and contacting representatives to make our voices heard. One of the greatest gifts a Penn State education has afforded me is numerous opportunities. With this gift comes an invaluable lesson: Opportunities without action are dreams; but with action, they become reality.
In 122 days, the state legislature will decide the fate of Penn State appropriations in June budget proceedings. These days are our opportunities. Become knowledgeable and engaged so that the fight for lower tuition doesn't remain a dream.
