Reader owns hope for IFC's 'social evolution'

After reading the Collegian's and the Interfraternity Council's (IFC) responses to readers' feelings on the IFC's "rape-free" zones, I agree -- it's not a laughing matter. The IFC has taken a stand against rape, and we should applaud them for realizing what the rest of the civilized world has known for quite some time.

And it's doggone important to know that fraternities will add "stiff penalties" to the jail time that rapists receive. What might those penalties be? Will rapists not be able to attend fraternity functions at the penal institution they are incarcerated at? As the father of a soon-to-be 1-year-old daughter, it warms my heart to know that by the time she is old enough to attend Dear Old State, the greek community may have moved beyond the basic understanding of civilized behavior, which allows a majority of us to recognize that rape is morally reprehensible behavior, without having to attend special training seminars.

Heck, in 18 years, the IFC may evolve enough to realize that ethnic and racial minorities, women and gays should have the same rights and privileges as everyone else. I realize that may be asking for a little more social evolution than they are ready for, but I have faith.
