Faculty rearrange class, test schedules to accommodate Thon

Collegian Staff Writer

With only a few days left until the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, students are feeling the pressure from both Thon activities and classwork.

James Hager, a Math 140 (Calculus with Analytical Geometry I) instructor, said the math department did not plan to have a test the week before Thon and tried to schedule the exam at a less stressful time.

"The main driver in the scheduling of the math exams for courses at this level is the potential impact and the overloading of tests among the typical courses taken by students in engineering and the physical sciences during the freshman year," he said.

However, he added that he is also aware of the after-effects Thon can have on classes and said he would not give a quiz on the Monday or Friday of Thon weekend.

"It's important for the students participating to proactively work with their professors to minimize the impacts ... ," Hagar said.

Annie McGregor, a Theatre 100 (The Art of Theatre) professor, said that she has always been a supporter of Thon and works with students who are involved.

"I don't plan the course syllabus around it, but I always let students make up any missed work and consider the Monday after Thon as an excused absence for dancers and organizers," McGregor said.

Lauren Duffey (freshman-public relations) said her involvement in Thon added to the stress of having five exams last week.

"I'm a little intimidated because it's such a big event, so I want to get all of my schoolwork done so I can concentrate on the weekend," she said.

Delta Zeta sorority member Christine Fitzgerald (senior-chemical engineering) is dancing in Thon this weekend.

"We're told to rest up, but I haven't had any time to rest because I've been studying for so many exams," Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald added that she was supposed to have a test on the Tuesday after Thon weekend, however, after speaking to her professor, they were able to set up an alternate time for the exam.

Phi Beta Sigma fraternity member Chidi Nwosu (sophomore-electrical engineering) said a lot is expected from everyone involved in Thon.

"I feel as though there is a lot of pressure to be prepared for exams, go to all the meetings for Thon and attend practice," Nwosu said.

Phi Beta Sigma is asking its members to attend Thon in shifts throughout the weekend to support the dancers.

"You just have to give out the extra effort," Nwosu added.
