PSU answers questions
Penn State has no carry over from last week's loss

Collegian Staff Writer

Heading into yesterday's game against Michigan the No. 8 Penn State Lady Lions had a lot of questions that needed to be answered.

Will they be ready to play after a week off?

Can they rebound after an embarrassing loss at the hands of No. 10 Minnesota?

And the most important question -- Is this team for real?

It didn't take long for the first sell-out crowd in the history of women's basketball in the Bryce Jordan Center to see the Lady Lions answer all of the above questions with an emphatic yes after a 73-44 win.

Penn State (19-4, 11-1 Big Ten) played arguably its best ten minutes of the season to start the game, taking a 13-0 lead and forcing Michigan (11-15, 4-9) into turnovers on its first four possessions. The Wolverines didn't even take a shot until the 16-minute mark when center Jennifer Smith launched a three-pointer that missed long.

When it was all said and done Michigan committed 24 turnovers that resulted in 29 points for Penn State. Lady Lions guards Kelly Mazzante and Jess Strom both finished with four steals, while the team as a whole had 15.

"We sat and watched a great team play a great game," Michigan women's basketball coach Cheryl Burnett said after the game.

On offense Penn State spread the wealth, with five players scoring in double figures. The three J's; Jess Strom, Jess Brungo and Jen Harris all finished with 10 points while Mazzante and Tanisha Wright scored 16 and 14, respectively. Strom also finished with 12 assists, recording her first double-double of the year.

"Tonight, we came out and played like gangbusters," Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland said after the game. "We fed off a lot of things. We certainly fed off the crowd, and we fed off each other."

After losing its first Big Ten game of the season its last time out at Minnesota, the Lady Lions seem to have taken this week off and refocused their goals.

"Taking pride in our goals and things we want to accomplish was a big thing these past couple days," Wright said.

"We came out and really had a focus on what we wanted to do as a Penn State team we didn't really think about who our opponent was, but we put a lot more emphasis on Penn State."

Even with Michigan's Smith scoring 22 points, most of which came from the foul line, it was the Wolverine's secondary scoring threats that the Lady Lions completely shut down. Tabitha Pool and Stephanie Gandy, who are averaging 14 and 12 points per game, respectively, were held to only four points, with Pool eventually being yanked in favor of her younger replacement.

After the game, the Lady Lions didn't seem to excited over the beating, but instead kept their heads seeming to understand that games like this are going to have to be the norm if they want to win the Big Ten.

"Coming off a loss we wanted to make sure we got all of our goals and beat a team the way that we should beat them," Mazzante said.
