Penn State (6-3) posted a 195.1, its second lowest score on the season. The team only scored lower in its season opener on the road against Alabama. The Nittany Lions' final tally was just enough to slip past Minnesota's 195.075.
At the conclusion of the first event, Lisa Clark's meet high 9.85 on the vault gave Penn State an early .25 lead over the Golden Gophers (5-5).
In the uneven bars, Penn State's Meredith Hoover's 9.85 built momentum for Jennifer Orlando and Stephanie Sullivan, who posted 9.775 and 9.725, respectively. However, Michelle Ilg's disappointing 9.300 and bars specialist Cécile Allen's 9.025 put a damper on the rotation and earned the Nittany Lions a 48.325 on the event as well as a 0.13 deficit.
Genavieve Shingle's 9.825 on the balance beam contributed to Penn State's 48.475 on the event.
Heading into the floor exercise, the Nittany Lions trailed the Golden Gophers by a whole point.
"We knew we couldn't give anything away if we wanted to come back," Shingle said. "We knew that everyone really had to step it up."
Penn State responded to Shephard's request by posting a season high 49.4 in the floor exercise, which was just enough to sneak past Minnesota.
"The athletes that missed their routines are totally capable of hitting their routines and they do in practice regularly so it's very frustrating," Shephard said. "The team is frustrated and the coaching staff is frustrated and we're going to do everything we can to not make the same mistakes."
