Robinson hurt in fight

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State quarterback Michael Robinson has confirmed to The Daily Collegian that he was involved in the fight that occurred at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion Feb. 7.

After the fight, he needed 24 stitches behind his ear after being pushed into a glass trophy case.

Robinson, the redshirt sophomore who is expected to compete with Zack Mills for the starting job, declined to elaborate on his role in the fight but said he might be making a statement soon.

The fight, which occurred at the end of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.'s "Black Ice" party, is still under investigation by Penn State University Police.

According to Chris Johnson, president of Alpha Phi Alpha, 218 HUB, several Penn State football players were involved in the incident, which he described as a five-to seven-minute bar-style fight involving between 10 and 20 people.

The Penn State athletic department has issued a statement saying it believed student athletes did not instigate the altercation but might have been victims.

Last season, Robinson started three games at quarterback and four games at tailback. But Penn State coach Joe Paterno said that throughout the season, Robinson's primary position was quarterback. Robinson also spent time at wide receiver and as a punt returner.

He finished the year with 892 passing yards, 396 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards.

Recently, there has been speculation that Robinson might be moving to defensive back, where he was all-state in high school.

While Paterno has not commented on the rumors, Greg Morelli, father of incoming quarterback recruit Anthony Morelli, said Penn State coaches have told him Robinson will be at defensive back next season.

However, in the past, Robinson has always insisted that he wants to be a quarterback.
