The season is on its final legs for the Penn State Ice Lions.
That would be the regular season.
In the final tune-up for the playoffs, the Ice Lions will face two University Hockey League (UHL) opponents in IUP and Pittsburgh.
The two games should be very different. IUP is ranked No. 1 in the ACHA Div. II Southeast rankings, while the Panthers are ranked No. 12.
Previously, IUP (21-5-4) beat Northeast No. 3 Penn State (23-5) in October.
"They caught us early on in the season. We have been playing better since the last time they saw us," Penn State Ice Lions coach Mo Stroemel said. "IUP has always been a knock out, drag out game for us."
Penn State also beat Pitt (8-17-2), early in the season.
The Panthers scored three power-play goals in the in the game that Penn State won 7-3.
"Don't expect that again. Our penalty kill has gotten a lot better as the season has gone on," Stroemel said.
IUP has had Penn State's number in recent years.
IUP also beat the Ice Lions in last year's UHL tournament.
Penn State has spent most of this week concentrating on IUP's offense and defense since they will be competiting in the UHL and national tournaments.
Penn State received its bid to the National Tournament yesterday.
If the Ice Lions can beat both teams, they have a shot to win the UHL regular season title, depending on the tiebreaker with IUP.
