The Penn State men's lacrosse team will look to fine tune its play in its final exhibition match against Lehigh. The Nittany Lions will face off against the Mountain Hawks tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in Holuba Hall with the regular season just one week away.
"We have exhibition games so we can see who's ready to play and see where we are," Penn State men's lacrosse coach Glenn Thiel said. "We just need to do better on the things we've been working."
While No. 17 Penn State opened preseason play last weekend against No. 1 Johns Hopkins, the Lions will be Lehigh's first opponent of the season.
Lehigh finished the 2003 season with a 5-9 record and a fifth-place finish in the Patriot League. Penn State's 9-5 exhibition loss to Johns Hopkins showed there is room for improvement on the Lions offensive and defensive ends. Thiel was impressed with the way his team generated offense, despite struggling to score. Finishing on the offensive end as well as clearing the ball and being solid in goal were the focus of this week's practice.
Prior to the start of the preseason, whether or not Penn State's young and inexperienced defense could pull together quick enough was a major concern.
However the defense has come together thus far as a cohesive unit, making first year starting goal tender Josh LaGrow much more confident in the cage.
"I think we are still looking to move ahead and just because we aren't playing another Hopkins next week doesn't mean its time to let down," attacker Charlie Perry said. We're looking to get better."
