'Rape-free' zones can't exist without mindset

Reading the headline of the Feb. 11 Daily Collegian put me into shock. I thought maybe the headline ("IFC houses designated 'rape-free' zones") could have been misleading about the content of the article. As I read the article on my way to class, however, it proved to discuss exactly what I had inferred from the title. While I am happy to see that the people who partake in greek life here at Penn State are finally addressing the issue of sexual assault, I think they are going about it in the wrong way. I'm an advocate
of violence education, however, I think our fraternities need more than education.

I've met numerous fraternity pledges and upon questioning them as to why they wanted to join, they responded: "For the parties and the girls." While the greek community does fundraising for several great charities and causes, it has yet to allow that social consciousness to permeate into its recreation. Fraternities cannot be "rape-free" until their members begin to respect women and stop believing that "once they're drunk, they'll do anything." Education is a step forward that should not be applauded, but expected. This not only goes for greeks, but for all Penn State students.
