Letter to the Editor
Employ equal action in sex assault teachings

I am writing this letter in response to the "rape-free" zone article in Wednesday's paper ("IFC houses designated 'rape-free' zones," Feb. 11).

First, let me state that rape is a serious crime that I do not support, and I am in no way trying to make fun of people who are rape victims. I was unaware that fraternities were originally designated as "rape" zones. Personally, I think it is rather hilarious that someone believes that a "rape-free sticker" will actually curve the amount of rape that goes on here at Penn State.

If an intoxicated person wants to have sex with someone, I highly doubt he or she will have the presence of mind to realize if he or she is in a "rape" or "rape-free" zone. At least the Interfraternity Council (IFC) is taking a step in the right direction by educating its members about sexual assault. It's just a shame that this was its best idea.

I also firmly believe that it should not just be frat guys who are educated about sexual assault. This stereotypes the frat guys as the only ones who commit rape. If you are going to have a program, you should show "equal action" and have sororities be subjected to it also.
