Readers react to story on IFC’s plan to establish ‘rape-free’ zones

I read The Daily Collegian for four years of school and have been reading it since I graduated, and I can honestly say that the article regarding fraternities being "rape-free" zones is by far the most ridiculous one to date ("IFC houses designated 'rape-free' zones," Feb. 11).

First of all, this piece of legislation accomplishes nothing. Really, all it does is give people the option of posting a sticker in their doorway. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) has always made pledges of fraternities attend various seminars, including one regarding sexual assault. I, and all those I pledged with way back in 1999, attended these seminars.

Granted, I will admit that these seminars are not as serious as they should be. Having a more organized seminar is fine, but having four or five is completely unnecessary. You're just going to repeat the same thing over and over again to people who probably would never do anything even remotely similar to rape. Those that would commit rape probably won't be attending a seminar.

Second, I can't believe that fraternities would have to declare an official stance that they are "rape-free" zones. They've always been rape-free zones, save for a few very bad apples. And I find it very hard to believe that by making this declaration, you're going to alter the mindset of the type of person who would commit such a crime.

In reading this story, I realize that much has changed as far as people's impression of fraternities as being evil groups out to promote sex, drugs and alcohol. Pretty soon, you are going to have to start branding members of the greek system with some symbol on their forehead that says girls can trust them.
