A job fair that was canceled Friday because of inclement weather will be rescheduled, most likely in April, said Bob Martin, director of career placement and internships for the College of Communications.

About 130 Penn State students were en route to the job fair in New York City when poor road conditions caused them to return to State College.

"We got as far as Lockhaven, then we turned back," said Andy Macasek (senior-public relations), who planned to attend the job fair. "It was a shame that it was canceled, but I guess safety is more important."

Martin said he arrived in New York City Thursday night and debated whether to cancel the event Friday morning. The decision was up to him, as the state police did not order a cancellation.

Martin said he spoke with bus drivers, then decided it was too hazardous.

The job fair was intended to give students in the College of Communications the opportunity to meet with public relations and advertising firms that operate out of New York City, said Andy Locke (junior-advertising and public relations), who helped organize the event.

Martin said in past years, Penn State has hosted a job exposition, but it did not attract firms from major cities.

"The demand is extremely high," he said, referring to jobs in communications. "They don't have to recruit; they get enough people knocking on their door. They expect you to come and see them."

To solve this problem, Martin decided to organize a job fair that would allow students to meet with the firms in person at the New York Marriott Financial Center.

Companies scheduled to attend included Deutsch Inc., an advertising firm, and Ruder and Finn, Inc., a public relations firm.

Locke said three buses of students departed for New York on Friday.

"I was disappointed, but it wasn't worth driving in those conditions," he said.
