USG asked IFC members to purchase spotlights and sidewalk lighting, which would cost about $30, or to have lights installed by local electric companies in coordination with the Fraternity Purchasing Association.
Town Sen. Tara Dulaney provided a list of specific areas in need.
John Poreba, president of Zeta Psi, said he thought the State College Borough should pay for the lighting instead of the fraternities.
"If worse comes to worst, we'll pay for it," Poreba said. "The cause is great, but I think the borough has enough money to pay for it. Think about how many tickets they're giving out in one day in State College."
Dulaney listed the lights on Zeta Psi grounds as examples of "good lighting." However, Poreba agreed the back alley could use improvement.
Improving lighting near fraternity houses is part of a three-prong USG lighting initiative. Rosenberger said he also plans to petition local realtors and the State College Borough Council to pay for downtown lighting.
USG also requested that IFC appoint a representative to sit on the recently formed Ambassador Committee. The committee, which is part of Downtown Improvement District, is dedicated to maintaining a "clean, well-lit, welcoming environment."
IFC President Andy Hackett said IFC is working as a liaison between USG and the IFC chapters.
"We are looking for the chapters to take the initiative on this," Hackett said. "[USG] is just looking for some student input, so it should be very feasible."
Hackett said the IFC executive council would discuss appointing a representative to sit on the Ambassador Committee.
Town Sen. Kristen Kofmehl told IFC members an effort to improve lighting would do "phenomenal things" for their image.
"All you have to say is, 'We want to do this,' and someone is going to come help you do it," Kofmehl said.
