Letter to the Editor
PSU acceptance based on grades, not looks

When I looked at Friday's front page and saw the article about Mark Wieder (" 'Boy of the Year' considers Penn State," Feb. 6), I almost threw down the paper in a fit of disgust.

While I find it appalling that this pretty boy was awarded such a grotesque sum of money simply because of his looks, I understand that the scholarship itself has nothing to do with Penn State. However, the fact that he was still granted admission to the University Park campus, in spite of the admissions essay he wrote ("Being so 'hot' will keep me warm during State College's cold winters"), caused the bile to rise in my throat again.

Seriously, what kind of dog and pony show are they running here?

We all know that GPAs and SAT scores are the most important factors considered when determining acceptance to Penn State, but does anyone even read these essays? Or do we give this cheeky metrosexual the nod for being oh-so-clever? And dreamy.

Considering the alcohol-fueled tendency of many Penn State males toward violence, I almost feel sorry for Wieder should he choose to accept Penn State's offer of admission and attend classes in the fall. Almost.
