Lady Lions take care of Hoosiers on road

Collegian Staff Writer

Business as usual.

That's the only way to describe the No. 5 Penn State Lady Lions win last night against an over-matched Indiana team in Assembly Hall, 66-49.

Not only did Penn State (18-3, 10-0 Big Ten) extend its win streak to 11 consecutive games, but senior Jess Brungo reached the career 1,000-point mark early in the first half. The win, which was by no means pretty, kept the Lady Lions atop the Big Ten.

While Kelly Mazzante led all scorers with 24 points, it was Brungo who played her best all-around game of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

"She's showed a lot of maturity and a lot of poise," Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland said on the Penn State Sports Radio Network. "She's just playing terrific for us."

But the game didn't go without problems. Instead, Penn State only held a four-point lead at halftime, with several players, including Jess Strom and Tanisha Wright, getting into early foul trouble.

But after a few quick fixes during halftime, the Lady Lions came out with renewed intensity and a more aggressive defense.

Penn State confused Indiana after implementing the full-court press early in the second half, which turned some poor decision making on the part of the Hoosiers.

Not quite four minutes into the second half Penn State found itself in the midst of an 11-2 run and a 13-point lead.

Penn State held Indiana to a season-low 28 percent from the field.

"They came out and tested us," Wright said. "We just kept our composure for the most part."

The Lady Lions ended up dressing only eight players last night and all saw minutes, excluding Ashli Schwab. Portland said she had some bumps and bruises and they need her healthy for Sunday's game at No. 13 Minnesota.

Penn State already beat Minnesota this season, 75-56, it only needs to look back to last season to see the Golden Gophers get the best of Penn State.

The players realize that if they want to win the Big Ten out right there is a good chance that they are going to have to run the table, which would include beating good teams on their courts.

"To keep on this run we have to respect everyone, but fear no one," Wright said.
