Former coach: Robinson a QB
Varina High School coach Gary Chilcoat says Michael Robinson won't be happy playing another position.

Despite reports that Penn State quarterback Michael Robinson will switch to defensive back, the junior from Richmond will remain a quarterback, according to his former coach at Varina High School, Gary Chilcoat.

"We talked in depth and at length over Thanksgiving break, and Mike's a quarterback," Chilcoat said.

Where the multi-talented Robinson would line up this fall was again called into question Wednesday when Greg Morelli -- father of five-star Penn Hills' quarterback Anthony Morelli, who signed with the Nittany Lions on Wednesday's National Letter of Intent Day -- told The Daily Collegian that Robinson would likely be moved to the defensive backfield.

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno cited the possibility that Robinson and several other incoming quarterback recruits could switch positions to demonstrate the availability of early playing time for Anthony, Greg Morelli said Wednesday.

Convincing Anthony he would have the opportunity to play early was a key part of his son's recruitment, Greg Morelli added.

On the possibility of Robinson making a full time switch to another position, Chilcoat said,

"I can't imagine that happening and, if it did, I would see him declaring and going pro."

This is not the first time speculation has surrounded Robinson switching to a full-time position other than quarterback.

Used at times as a punt returner and wide receiver, the versatile Robinson started five games in 2003 at tailback, while receiving the majority of the carries in those games.

Robinson, who was an all-state defensive back in high school, chose to attend Penn State in large part because the Lions wanted him as a quarterback.

Many other major football programs recruited Robinson as a defensive back.

Even with his diverse physical talents, Robinson has said throughout his career that quarterback is the position he most wants to play.

"His heart is at quarterback, but any position [Paterno] has asked him to play he has because he is a team player. But if he's not at quarterback, he'll be a little unhappy," Chilcoat said.

"He won't be completely happy until he is the starting quarterback."

Penn State Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson said Robinson and Paterno would not comment on the statements made by Morelli's father.

Penn State football coaches Fran Ganter, Ron Vanderlinden and Mike McQueary were approached for comment, but said little about Greg Morelli's statements.

"The way it's always been here is we don't comment on incoming recruits or position changes -- that all comes from [Paterno]," Ganter said.

But Ganter did offer this: "Now, I would imagine if Mr. Morelli said that, he's not making up stories."
