The first action the Penn State men's tennis team sees this spring will be anything but a warm-up. The Nittany Lions will have to compete in a very tough opening match and must prove they have what it takes to be successful this season.
When the Big Red of Cornell rolls into town tomorrow, the Lions must be on their "A-game" in order to keep the bragging rights they earned last spring with a close 4-3 win against Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y.
"We had a dogfight with them last year," Penn State men's tennis coach Jan Bortner said. "They have a stronger lineup coming back this year."
The No. 1 pairing of Zach Gallin and Scott Spencer returns this season as seniors for the Big Red. The experience at doubles mixed with talented youth could serve as a stumbling point for the Lions, who are opening their season.
Not to be outdone, the senior duo of Roddy Cantey and Clint Keithly will bring years of starting experience to the match at first doubles for the Lions, and will also compete in singles play. Look for freshman Ryan Berger to see his first spring action after earning a starting spot last fall. All players must be in form to compete with one of the top teams in the Ivy League.
A win against Cornell could easily provide the team with the confidence of beating a top-tier squad, as well as solidifying Penn State's place as a leader in the East.
A victory will not come easily, however, for Penn State. The Lions will have earn every point against an adversary as strong as Cornell.
