Letter to the Editor
Readers respond to cancellation of classes at Penn State yesterday

The administration's lack of foresight yesterday astounded me. Although I realize our university has higher standards than a high school for class cancellation due to snow, there is no good reason that classes were not canceled until after 8 a.m.

There was no doubt that we were about to get slammed with a large amount of snow. Given the impending storm and the less-than-adequate snow removal on campus and in the town of State College, classes should have been canceled before they began yesterday. Like many students, I ride a bus to campus. Around 7:30 a.m., when I was riding to campus, there were whiteout conditions.

On the way back from campus after classes were canceled, my bus was fishtailing all over the road. We passed an accident in which a car slid straight through an intersection into a snow bank.

Many students do not live within walking distance of campus, and I'm sure a large majority of faculty and staff don't either. Students are starting to feel as though their safety is forfeited to the university in wake of the recent snowstorms.

Even though Penn State may feel that holding class is extremely important, the administration should practice more foresight on days like yesterday.

Students should never have to choose between missing a mandatory class and risking their own safety to attend it. The administration must be more responsible.
