Balanced offense spurs Icers to weekend sweep

Collegian Staff Writer

Defenseman Curtiss Patrick collected the puck after the face-off at center ice on Saturday and quickly dumped the puck into Michigan-Dearborn's zone, where forward Teague Willits-Kelley quickly gathered the puck and fed it to a streaking Brett Wilson, who scored just nine seconds after a goal by Justin DePretis.

The goal capped a three-goal spurt in the span of 44 seconds that turned a 2-1 game midway through the second period into an eventual 8-1 rout. More than anything, however, the goal signified that the No. 1 ACHA Div. I Icers are more than a one-trick pony.

Using goals from all four lines this weekend, the Icers (26-2-0) surgically picked apart No. 7 Michigan-Dearborne's (15-13-2) defensive schemes, winning 6-0 on Friday and 8-1 Saturday.

"It was two of our best team oriented wins," said Penn State Icers coach Joe Battista, who collected his 450th career win on Saturday. "We scored a lot of good goals, we moved the puck very well, and I think we did a very good job of beating the defensive traps."

Michigan-Dearborn coach Josh Brandwene, all too familiar with the Icers from his time spent under Battista as a former player, shadowed the Icers top two scorers -- Kevin Jaeger and Glenn Zuck -- wherever they went, challenging the other lines to step up. Consider the challenge accepted.

For the first time this season on Friday, neither Zuck nor Jaeger scored a goal, but the Icers once again rolled, thanks to their underrated supporting cast.

"That's the beauty of having the depth that we have," Battista said. "It's kind of an emotional lift when your grit guys get you goals. I think everyone on the team gets pumped."

That's exactly what it did on Friday, as fourth line forward Willits-Kelly scored at 6:31 of the first period, giving the Icers a 1-0 lead. Quickly defenseman Joe Maglaque and Bill Downey added goals to make it 3-0 at the end of the first period.

Patrick scored the only goal in the second period and forward Garrett Divins and defenseman Brendan Martin finished the scoring, and the shutout was cemented by goalie Scott Blackman, who made 39 saves for his second shutout of the season.

The Icers once again got solid play in net, including 31 saves from goalie Chris Matteo on Saturday, and the defense, which struggled at times giving up odd-man rushes was rock solid throughout.

"[The defense is] learning you can contribute offensively without the downside risk of taking unnecessary chances," Battista said.

The Wolves were held to zero for 10 on the power play and few quality chances on the weekend, and by Saturday Jaeger and Zuck, as well as linemate Mike Carrano, were back at it, accounting for four goals in the win.

But it was the three-goal spurt, including one by forward Brendan Roache, that started it for the Icers on Saturday, something they will need more of come national tournament time in March.

"It's great when all the lines step up and score," Downey said. "Glenn and Jaeger are going to score their goals but [when other lines score goals] it takes some of the pressure off of them."

For this weekend it took only 44 seconds to do so.
