Collegian Staff Writer

Repetition is how a good gymnast stakes claim to being an elite gymnast.

Repetition is how a good team becomes a collegiate perennial powerhouse.

The Penn State men's gymnastics team, won the West Point Open Championship Friday night in West Point, N.Y. -- repeating the feat for the seventh consecutive year.

The Nittany Lions finished with a score of 214.625 ahead of No. 7-ranked Nebraska (210.900) and No. 11-ranked Army (208.700).

The first-place effort was propelled by a host Lions with strong finishes in Friday's team competition, which was the preliminary round for the individual championships on Saturday night.

Individual Event Finals

The preliminary round was aptly prophetic of the events that unfolded during Saturday's competition.

The highly touted showdown on the rings between the nation's first, second and third-ranked competitors did not disappoint.

No. 1 Kevin Tan and No. 2 Brian Lee of Army finished in a tie for first with scores of 9.825.

This was the third meeting of the season between Tan and Lee, and the only time the two gymnasts did not tie was during Friday's preliminary rounds in which Tan beat Lee by a slim margin. However, the big winner was Zach Roeder.

Roeder was a double-winner with dominating first-place performances on the pommel horse (9.600) and floor exercise (9.250). He also finished in a fifth-place tie on the vault.

Luis Vargas had a strong Saturday s howing with a first-place tie on the high bar at 9.600. He also had a pair of sixth-place finishes in the pommel horse (8.500) and parallel bars (8.300)
