Lions have strong outing, grab 3 first place finishes

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State men's track team finished the Penn State National tournament with three wins and several other top-five finishes.

The distance medley relay of Tim Walker, Jaret Campisi, Dan Michael and Matt Lincoln earned the team a first-place finish with a time of 9:48.43 seconds, despite a baton drop on the 800-meter third leg. The drop caused Penn State to lose a lot of time, but in the end, the team's anchor, Lincoln ran a leg of 4:03.8 to give the team an exciting come-from-behind win.

Sophomore Lincoln also won the 600-meter dash, a race primarily run in the Big Ten, with a time of 1:18.16, giving Penn State it's second win of the meet.

The 4x400-relay team of Campisi, Lincoln, Steve Morgan and Ernie Terrell ran a time of 3:12.51 to win the race. As the anchor, Terrell ran an incredible split of 46.95.

Penn State men's track and field coach Harry Groves was impressed with the relay team, crediting each of the four runners with a good leg.

"Campisi getting that lead right off the bat was valuable because we knew that with Matt in there he was going to be fighting people off since he's not a real quarter-miler," he said.

"Morgan blew it open pretty good and then Ernie Terrell just blew it wide open."

Feeling confident in its first-place finishes, the team also gained confidence with the times of freshman Caleb Hood, who took second in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:04.71. String performances were turned in by Terrell, Campisi and Diamond Woolford all finished with competitive times.

Groves was satisfied with the team as a whole, and saw the meet as an opportunity to gain some experience from some of the more experienced athletes in the competition.

"With the size and number of teams here, and the unattached athletes, you don't know who you're running against. You might be running against an Olympian, or a national champion a couple of times," he said. "If we won three, I thought we were lucky, and we won three."
