NEWS

While the stereotypes of a farmer range from strong men heaving bales of hay to an old man in overalls with a straw hat, recent statistics are defying those stereotypes. Recent studies have shown that the number of female farmers in Pennsylvania is growing steadily.

Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President Ian Rosenberger said his lighting initiative is in the "implementation phase" and will "absolutely" be completed before his term ends.

The GSA C.A.F.E. is back, and despite receiving less University Park Allocation Committee funding than last semester, the film series will return to its usual schedule of two films a week.

Every possible debate, from Newlyweds to sports stars, was discussed at the first meeting by the Distinguished Speakers Series (DSS) Wednesday night to decide next year's lineup.

The second wave of changes to Pennsylvania's drunken driving law will take effect Sunday as part of the legislation that lowered the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) from .10 to .08 percent.

Getting together, ordering some wings and watching football with his buddies -- a tradition that Scott Klinghoffer has no intention of changing for Super Bowl XXXVIII.

The Penn State Board of Trustees recently approved proposals for the expansion of one on-campus fitness facility and the purchase of two off-campus properties.

If starting the weekend with a new flick sounds like a good idea, State College residents now have another area venue to take in a movie.

A man pointed a handgun at a guest of the Days Inn Penn State, 240 S. Pugh St., early yesterday morning, the State College Police Department said.

A local real estate corporation is in hot water with state officials after it allegedly failed to return security deposits to tenants.

A woman allegedly driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol hit a parked car, which then hit another parked car, at about 1 a.m. yesterday, police said.

Many students from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community believe college campuses across the nation are "homophobic," according to a recent study by a Penn State official.

The government may not be able to stop computer viruses, but it has come up with a service to help computer users detect them more easily and keep them from infecting their computers.

State Rep. Matthew Baker, R-Bradford and Tioga , will propose a bill to the state legislature Monday that would require background checks for all new faculty hires in Pennsylvania community colleges, colleges and universities.

While the windows of the Ames department store in Hills Plaza have remained dark for more than a year, the recent closure of other stores may be signs of suburban State College being overbuilt, some real estate agents and community groups say.

Your team probably didn't make it into the Super Bowl this Sunday, but there are advertisers who are gambling that you're going to watch it anyway. And there's a reason some of these same companies are headed to the high roller's table: They know you'll be watching.

SPORTS

The Penn State women's tennis team will look to its veterans this season in hopes of returning to the highs the team reached in 2001.

The women's tennis team will get a taste of competition and settle the score with an instate rival in the first weekend of spring competition.

The Patriots and Panthers have rested for two weeks before their big event this weekend.

This is it.

Home sweet home.

The Penn State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will look to win its final home meets of the season tomorrow.

Highly touted quarterback Daryll Clark, of Youngstown, Ohio's Ursuline High School, committed to Penn State late yesterday afternoon.

There was an entirely different type of crowd in an entirely different type of arena. And the Penn State women's basketball team was facing a squad it could not seem to get off its back last season, holding just a five point lead at halftime in that matchup. But last night, it was simply a No. 5 team facing an unranked Atlantic 10 conference team, and Penn State's 80-44 win at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia made that undeniably clear.

Finally! That is exactly what the No. 11 Penn State men's volleyball team (3-3) is thinking as it begins its home schedule against Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foe Rutgers-Newark (2-3, 1-0 EIVA)

Tomorrow night, the No. 18 Penn State women's gymnastics team will be looking to build on its success from last week's meet against Central Michigan when the Nittany Lions face Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Yale at Rec Hall.

Tonight at 8 at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, the Penn State wrestling team will line up across the mat from the vaunted Iowa Hawkeyes for the 12th time since the arena opened in January 1983.

In looking to define the word "dominate," one would find that it means to control, to rule, to occupy a more elevated or superior position.

It's a question that anyone associated with this program has trouble answering -- why can't the Nittany Lions win on the road?

Everyone knows it's easy to win games in front of a home crowd. What really separates the good teams from the average teams is an ability to win tough games on the road.

At 6 a.m., most college students are snoring in their beds, dreaming of being far away from the dreary, cold weather of Penn State.

Senior Connie Moore faces the toughest competition of the year this weekend with a chip on her shoulder the size of Mount Nittany.

ARTS

I'm a sucker for bad movies. I'm as likely to go see the latest Tom Hanks drama as I would Carrot Top's most recent direct-to-video bomb (Chairman of the Board, anyone?). So it is with great pleasure that I recommend to the Penn State masses that Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! is one of the best bad movies I've seen in a long time.

When I agreed to see The Butterfly Effect, it was mostly because I was curious to see if Ashton Kutcher is more than a pretty face and the leader of the trucker hat fashion cult.

"I Got That Fire." "Back That Thing Up." "Ha." "From Her Mama." I'm going to hate on Juvenile a bit here but know that it comes from love.
