Angered students right to 'demand' changes

I am writing in response to yesterday's letter by Martin Waddington ("Fulfill campus change without demanding it," Jan. 29). It seems to me that Waddington has not attended the University Park campus long enough to realize that change does not occur without demanding it.

Not too long ago it seemed "ludicrous" that people of color would even be able to attend this university. More recently, students demanded that there be more lighting on- and off-campus and that there be an Africana Research Center.

The "demands" of Black Caucus are very similar to a call for action made by Penn State President Graham Spanier's Joint Commissions, published in an ad Jan. 16.

Disgruntled students on this campus have every right to "demand" things, such as a Latino studies program, a better-organized diversity education curriculum, and more minority faculty and administrators.
