Letter to the Editor
Spanier's e-mail policy misleading to students

Penn State President Graham Spanier has an e-mail address where supposedly students, faculty and staff can send him questions, comments or concerns that they may have about the university.

On the Web page that is dedicated to explaining the purpose of this e-mail address, the administration emphasizes the fact that the e-mails are seen by Spanier.

However, being the good Penn Stater I am, during my tenure as a student here, I have sent the president about 15 e-mails at the address to show my concern about events or university procedures.

Every time I have sent an e-mail to the address, the response has come from one of two people: Steve MacCarthy, vice provost for university relations or one of the secretaries on Spanier's staff.

I thought that when one e-mailed that address, one was to receive a response from Spanier himself. Now, I understand that this man probably receives thousands of e-mails per day, and it would be impossible for him to personally respond to all of them.

However, he could respond to a few personally, or the administration could just put on the Web page that responses will come from the vice provost. That would be better than lying to the Penn State community.

I am tired of putting up with an administration that is nationally known as being "student friendly." What a crock.
