I'd like to think that Kris Ankarlo's column ("France, the French, 'fruity' French hats next in America's bullseye," Jan. 29) printed in yesterday's Daily Collegian was simply a failed attempt at political satire.
Otherwise, I would be left to conclude that the column, which described Francophones as a "lewd, immoral race of people" that are "nothing more than a bunch of fruity homosexuals," was designed to denigrate and ridicule a group of people based solely on their nationality and ethnic background.
This, combined with Ankarlo's less than flattering description of homosexuals as "fruity," would be more than enough evidence for me to conclude that he finds humor in making hateful generalizations.
Personally, I'd like to think that with all the problems this campus already experiences due to cultural miscommunications, Ankarlo would be wise enough to avoid any further stereotyping.
