Fulfill campus change without demanding it
I was intrigued by Randy Winder's language in yesterday's article ("Republicans on campus respond to negativity," Jan. 28). I read his article and came to the paragraph where he mentions the "demands" made on the Penn State College Republicans by Black Caucus. Surely, I thought, there are words to describe Caucus' requests besides "demands," which has a decidedly negative connotation. Upon reflection, however, I came to the conclusion that "demands" was in fact the perfect word. Spring 2001 came to mind, as I recalled the Caucus' demands of Penn State President Graham Spanier and the university as a whole. It seems that with increasing frequency, "Black Caucus" and "demands" are found together in the pages of The Daily Collegian. This is disturbing to me. What if every organization on campus decided to make ludicrous (see the fact that some of Caucus' most recent demands are not legally possible) demands on Penn State and its opposing organizations? What if, for example, the Interfraternity Council (IFC) demanded that the university leave the greek community alone because Penn State's ideas of how fraternities and sororities should operate conflicted? IFC would be laughed at. I am frightened to imagine what kind of campus climate that would create. Perhaps, instead of demanding action, a more proactive approach should be adopted. Look within a particular organization to find ways to fulfill desired actions instead of demanding that others fulfill them for you. Martin Waddington
