Slick campus sidewalks show lack of concern

Walking to my first class yesterday morning, I saw a girl begin to fall and grab her two friends for support. The threesome tumbled to the ground in a helpless panic. Walking to my next class, I saw three more people "wipe out" on separate occasions. It was a funny sight, and since I was too far to see if they were all right, I silently laughed to myself.

First off, let me say, I am not one who wants classes canceled for days on end. We, as students, pay a lot of money to attend Penn State, and classes should be held each and every day.

My question to the fat cats of Penn State is, why can't the sidewalks be cleared off?

Isn't that what the two-hour delay was for? I understand that the sidewalks could not be cleared in time Monday, as it was snowing on and off all morning. However, more than 24 hours later, there were still copious amounts of trampled, dirty snow on the sidewalks that make for an unstable, movable surface under thousands of students' boots. Why?

A college that has mountain ranges around it should surely realize that the 40-plus inches of annual snowfall could be a hazard to the thousands of students, especially for those who make the trek up the steep hill on Shortlidge Avenue or the winding sidewalk that slopes near the Schreyer Honors College.

All in all, I am very disappointed at Penn State's lack of care for the students and faculty alike.

Do you, Penn State, think you could clear the sidewalks for everybody without raising tuition yet again?
