Penn State loses to UI, beats OSU on the road

Collegian Staff Writer

DeWitt Driscoll had no time to digest his overtime loss to Illinois' Michael Martin Friday night at Rec Hall.

As soon as the sophomore walked off the mat, Penn State wrestling coach Troy Sunderland was in his ear, scolding the sophomore for what Sunderland called a "mental breakdown" in overtime.

"DeWitt got frustrated in overtime and that can't happen," Sunderland said.

Sunderland was referring to Driscoll suffering a takedown and then laying flat on the mat before getting pinned in overtime and putting the Nittany Lions in a 6-0 hole to start the meet. Things didn't improve much for the sixth-ranked Lions the entire night as No. 3 Illinois left State College with a 26-13 victory in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The Lions rebounded yesterday as they traveled to Ohio State and defeated the No. 22 Buckeyes 20-14.

The headliner in Columbus was the heavyweight match between the No. 1 and No. 2 heavyweights in the nation, as Penn State's Pat Cummins took on top-ranked Tommy Rowlands of the Buckeyes.

The two heavyweights entered the match with a combined 55-0 record on the season and it was Cummins who finished the weekend still undefeated, as he knocked off Rowlands by a slim 3-2 margin. Cummins notched a two-point takedown in the first period and an escape in the second period to gain the victory. The two wrestlers could face each other as many as three more times the rest of the season. Cummins also pinned No. 10 Mike Behnke of Illinois in Friday's match.

The meet against Illinois was closer than the score indicated, as Driscoll, James Woodall, Jeremy Hart, and Eric Bradley lost extremely close matches. Sunderland said the mental errors cost the Lions the win. Aside from Driscoll, Hart, who was making his first start at Rec Hall, gave up a late reversal and lost 7-6.

"We're still a good team," Sunderland said. "We just made too many mistakes to beat the No. 3 team in the nation."

At 133, No. 6 Josh Moore bounced back from two losses last weekend at National Duals with two wins, including a victory against No. 4 Mark Jayne of Illinois. Moore was battling the flu last weekend, but said he didn't want to use being sick as an excuse for his losses.

"People started thinking I'm not that good anymore," Moore said. "I just wanted to wrestle well to boost my confidence."

No. 11 Matt Storniolo also went 2-0 on the weekend, including a win against No. 12 Jeff Ratliff of Ohio State. Storniolo said he has been in the same shoes as Driscoll and some of the other wrestlers who struggled against Illinois and knows they will bounce back. After Sunderland made Driscoll run sprints in the back hallway of Rec Hall following his match, Storniolo said he tried to lift his teammate's spirits.

"I tried to comfort him [Driscoll]," Storniolo said. "DeWitt's better than that guy and he knows it. There are more important matches coming up in the future."

At 184, No. 9 Eric Bradley went 1-1 on the weekend against two ranked opponents. Bradley dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 4 Brian Glynn of Illinois, but bounced back with a 6-4 decision against No. 6 Blake Kaplan of Ohio State yesterday. Another bright spot for the Lions was Woodall at 157 who took No. 1 Alex Tirapelle to overtime before eventually losing 12-10. Woodall then won a major decision yesterday against the Buckeyes.
