Mazzante breaks down records, barriers with latest successes

Penn State is all about setting records. Penn State strives to maintain its great reputation by winning awards on all fronts of the university.

One woman has made Penn State's name and its athletic program truly shine. Not to mention, she's really made a name for herself.

When Kelly Mazzante broke the all-time Big Ten scoring record, she became, what we'd like to call, a basketball player who broke a very major record.

She not only beat the all-time scoring for women, but she beat the old leader, who just happens to be a man. But that's the best part about this. Mazzante has shown that athletes break records, not men and women. It's impressive that she has more points in her career than a man who plays in the NBA. But what's more impressive is she, in a pool of hundreds others, is the leading scorer. She has the crown of most points in the Big Ten and tops all others.

Usually when speaking of her records, people tend to say she broke the all-time Big Ten men's scoring record. No, Mazzante simply placed herself
at the top of every Big Ten basketball player, man or woman, and that is something worth noting.

But she doesn't talk much about it. She is what Penn State needs at this point. After a shoddy football season and a lackluster men's basketball program, Mazzante is a beacon of light to Penn State sports. She is what every athlete should strive to become; not because she breaks records, but because she holds the bar high and is someone children and younger athletes look up to.

And we're lucky to have someone like her to look up to.

Mazzante should be incredibly proud. Penn State should be incredibly proud. Mazzante puts Penn State sports back into the good spotlight, the good front page story.

And everyone likes to read some good stories.

Thanks, Kelly. You have made a lot of people proud.
