The 8 a.m. debate
What do I think about 8a.m. classes? I think they're horrible. I know that like most people, I simply can't pay attention in class that early. There's the occasional "morning person" that doesn't mind early classes, but for most of us, it's difficult to learn anything that early -- especially when we don't usually go to bed until at least midnight. But it's not always because we're out partying until the sun comes up (although that's sometimes the case). Many of us have other commitments like jobs, volunteer activities, clubs, sports and other organizations to occupy our time. I was only committed to working 10 to 15 hours a week, so I can only imagine how difficult it must be for people who work twice or three times as much as I did. So when things like that are taken into consideration, our only option is to stay up late to study or write papers. I've heard the argument that college students are lazy, want to sleep in and have no idea what it's like to be in the real world. I can speak from experience that getting up to be at class at 8 a.m. and getting up to be at work are not the same. I'm currently on my second co-op rotation through the science co-op office, getting real-life working experience in a lab. I have to be at work at 8 a.m. every day and often stay until 5 or 6 p.m., and while it takes some getting used to, waking up that early gets easier. While I think that 8 a.m. classes are generally unbearable, I don't necessarily think that they should be eliminated altogether. I personally don't enjoy class that early, but I also don't enjoy being at class at 5 or 6 p.m. A more feasible option is to ensure that if a class is offered at 8 a.m., there's also a later section, no matter what class it is.
