'Clueless' AD hurting PSU athletic program
With another men's basketball season headed straight down the tubes, I feel it's time the university finally calls into question the performance of Athletic Director Tim Curley. Curley's latest moves -- or lack thereof -- exemplify the problem with having an athletic director who has never experienced anything else besides Penn State. Last spring, when Jerry Dunn announced his resignation, Curley decided to turn to his long-time family friend, Ed DeChellis, to turn around the program. DeChellis had a career winning percentage of .530 and played 2 years at Penn State Beaver -- neither of which scream "potential Big Ten hire." But he was, after all, a Penn State product, so the hire was justified. The only problem is that Penn State basketball stinks and always has. So why continue on with the same sorry tradition? Because hometown State College product Curley knows nothing else. Curley is as equally clueless when it comes to the football team. Penn State ranked last in almost all special teams statistical categories last season, yet has never had a special teams coach. Paterno has no plans to hire one either. Can't someone step in and make educated suggestions, or must this 1950s formula for running a football program continue to be followed? Penn State's major sports need an injection of new ideas. Before attending Penn State, I had heard central Pennsylvania had a large Amish population. I just didn't know it was located in the athletic department. Ryan Curtis
