Battaglia 'cheap shot' can't justify opinions
In yesterday's Daily Collegian, Brian Battaglia stated, "Andy, myself and others at the party are not malevolent baby killers. We're nice people. He's a nice guy" ("USG decides fate of senators at party," Jan. 22). These statements were used to justify Battaglia's opinion regarding the possible Senate action against South Halls Senator Andy Banducci. Using such a politically polarized situation to justify one's opinions about student government is entirely unnecessary. As a former town senator, I worked with both Battaglia and Banducci. Although my political opinions differ from theirs, I will admit that Battaglia and Banducci are nice people. I also believe they both worked in the interests of students while serving as senators. However, exploiting the use of a phrase that ignites great political debate in a setting reserved for student action is uncalled for. USG is about serving students; it is not about expressing one's opinion on abortion or any other national political issue for that matter. Battaglia's statement in support of Banducci was a cheap shot at pro-choice activists and supporters at an inappropriate time and place. I hope Battaglia will consider the consequences of his words and actions before we again hear from him publicly. Katie M. Shade
