Letter misses point of abortion being 'private'

Josh Potteiger's letter about abortion ("Abortion involves two 'distinct' people's lives," Jan. 21) makes some credible points, but I feel it might be a little lacking. In the first part of the letter, he notes, "Science has not been able to prove that a stage in development must be reached for human life to begin." If this is so, how can he state, "The unborn child is scientifically and medically recognized as a unique and distinct person?"

Research or studies that definitively state life begins at any point are few and far between. Potteiger should present the sources he used to back up his statements to make his argument more concrete. Everyone knows what the pro-life and pro-choice arguments are, and restating these opinions accomplishes nothing unless you can present some supporting facts. He also notes that many pro-life supporters are women who have had abortions and realized the gravity of their decision after the fact.

This is very true and speaks for the serious nature of abortion, but he should also mention the many women who have had abortions and have remained pro-choice. Many of these women are dedicated to protecting their right to privacy. Ultimately, an abortion is a private matter involving a woman's health, life and future.

Nobody has the right to tell a young woman what is right or wrong for her.
