Members of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, 234 E. Beaver Ave., waived their right yesterday to a preliminary hearing at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte on one charge of furnishing alcohol to minors.
Members of Kappa Alpha Order indicated on court documents that they intend to plead not guilty and request a jury trial at their formal arraignment on Feb. 17.
According to court documents, the charges stem from a July 27 incident in which the State College Police Department responded to a fight in the front yard of Kappa Alpha Order's house. Police said they observed a large party and empty beer cans scattered throughout the fraternity house.
A 17-year-old involved in the altercation told police that members of the fraternity had given him beer while inside the house. Two other individuals under 21 also told police they had been served beer inside the fraternity house.
That same evening, Ammon Ali, 17, of State College, was arrested after an altercation in which he allegedly stabbed two members of Kappa Alpha Order and a member of Sigma Alpha Mu, 329 E. Prospect Ave.
Ali was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of simple assault and one count each of recklessly endangering another person, making terrorist threats and harassment. It is unclear whether the two incidents were related and the outcome of Ali's criminal proceedings is unavailable because he is a juvenile.
Interfraternity Council (IFC) President Andy Hackett declined to comment on the charges against the fraternity or what charges the IFC might take against Kappa Alpha Order.
Repeated phone calls to Kappa Alpha Order president Joseph Chiodo went unanswered.
