Letter to the Editor
Abortion involves two 'distinct' people's lives

Tomorrow is the Right to Life March in Washington, D.C., and the members of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship wish to state their support for life.

The abortion debate is whether or not the unborn are living human beings. The Orthodox Christian Church, the Church of the Apostles that continues to exist today, has always believed and taught that abortion is wrong because life begins at conception. Science has not been able to prove that a stage in development must be reached for human life to begin.

This is not merely a question of a woman's choice to control her own body. Once a woman is pregnant, there is another human being involved and "her body" is no longer the primary issue. The unborn child is scientifically and medically recognized as a unique and distinct person who is separate from the mother's body. If depending upon her for shelter and nourishment make the unborn a part of "the mother's body," then newborn and/or older children who need maternal care also fall under the category of being a part of their mother's physical body -- a suggestion which is patently ridiculous.

Many of those in the pro-life movement are women who have had abortions. They can tell you of the life-long pain and guilt of never seeing their unborn children smile back at them because, at one time, they thought it was just a choice about their own bodies. Now they realize that it wasn't a choice at all -- it was a child.
