Officer victim of assault

Collegian Staff Writer

A State College man is facing multiple assault charges after he allegedly hit a State College Police Department officer who was trying to arrest him.

Luis R. Rodriguez, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y. was arrested early Sunday morning, arraigned before District Justice Thomas Jordan and released on $25,000 bail.

The officer, who was not hospitalized after the incident, was struck in the face while responding to a reported fight on the 100 block of West College Avenue.

Rodriguez faces one count each of aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, harassment, public drunkenness and criminal mischief.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for this morning at Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.

According to court documents, the officer was called to Players Nite Club, 112 W. College Ave., after a crowd gathered in front of the building.

While still in his car, the officer observed two individuals attempting to fight, but members of the crowd were separating them.

One of the individuals left the scene, while the other man, who police later identified as Rodriguez, began to punch the glass window of a neighboring business with both of his fists.

When the officer stepped out of his car, Rodriguez stopped punching the window and attempted to flee the scene. The officer informed him several times that he was under arrest and attempted to restrain him. Rodriguez then began to swing wildly, striking the officer in the face and causing an abrasion, according to the documents.

The officer responded with pepper spray and continued to struggle with the man before finally handcuffing him and putting him in the police car.

The officer said in the documents that Rodriguez smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech.

Police were unable to determine whether Rodriguez is a Penn State student.
