The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate went into an executive session at 10:09 p.m. to discuss the details of the investigation against East Halls Sen. Matt Ritsko and South Halls Sen. Andy Banducci, who attended former Town Sen. Brian Battaglia's controversial Halloween party.
At press time, the body had not decided to impeach or exonerate the senators in question.
Before the closed executive session, seven students spoke out during the open student forum against impeaching the two senators.
Battaglia addressed the Senate about forming an "illegal" committee. He related the controversy to a past presidential scandal.
"Bill Clinton was not impeached for having sex too often," Battaglia said.
"He was impeached because he lied under oath, and that is perjury. Andy has done nothing more questionable than attend a party," he said.
Battaglia said the charges against Banducci are unconstitutional.
"Andy, myself, and others at the party are not malevolent baby killers," he said. "We're nice people. He's a nice guy."
Former Town Sen. Erica D'Eramo asked Senate members if any of them are also guilty of actions similar to those of the senators in question.
"Has anyone been silent when they should have spoken up?" D'Eramo asked the body. "I know I have ... Has anyone attended a party where offensive costumes were worn, such as a 'pimps and hoes' party where women are degraded?" D'Eramo asked.
People often overlook offensive behavior when it is coming from their own friends, she said. She added that she knew the senators in question were not silent at the controversial party.
"We can not pick and choose who we are going to persecute and who we are going to let go," D'Eramo said.
President of the East Hall Residence Association, Abbey Rhode, made a statement supporting Ritsko on behalf of the association.
"Matt has always made the students of East Halls a top priority," she said.
Shauna Moser, a College Republican who also attended Battaglia's party, brought up recent bike theft charges against USG Vice President Takkeem Morgan. "You are not holding these people to the same standards, and it's not fair," Moser said.
Morgan, who usually serves as Senate chair, was not in attendance for unknown reasons.
Brad Cochran also spoke against impeaching the senators. Town Sen. Deanna Nachreiner asked Cochran if Banducci asked him to make a statement.
"Even if he did, that would be confidential and irrelevant because these are my beliefs," Cochran said.
In his executive report, USG President Ian Rosenberger urged senators to get back on track.
"The longer this goes on, the less time you have to fulfill your promises to constituents," he said.
Rosenberger also announced the resignation of Governmental Relations Director Frank Camarota, who was also involved in the controversy surrounding the College Republicans. It is unknown when he resigned, or if his resignation was related to the controversy.
