Penn State guard Kelly Mazzante was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for her efforts against Illinois Jan. 18 and Michigan Jan. 15. It is the third time this year that Mazzante has been honored, and the 15th time in her career, a Big Ten women's basketball record.
Against Illinois on Sunday, Mazzante, a two-time Kodak All-American and Wade Trophy candidate, helped keep No. 8 Penn State (13-3, 6-0) perfect in the Big Ten by scoring 24 points and going 11-for-12 from the free throw line. In the process, Mazzante became the Big Ten Conference women's basketball all-time leading scorer with 2,594 career points, passing Ohio State's Katie Smith's previous record of 2,578 points on the all-time scoring charts.
Mazzante is now 20 points away from passing Calbert Cheaney's Big Ten alltime career scoring mark of 2,613, a record he set in 132 games with Indiana.
Through Sunday, Mazzante has played in 115 career games.
Earlier in the week Mazzante hit two 3-pointers, grabbed six rebounds and netted 19 points as the Lady Lions downed Michigan, 68-56.
