NEWS

The trial for a Centre County man charged with sexually assaulting two 6-year-old girls in 1993 will not start today as scheduled.

Fire department activity resulting from sprinklers being set off for unknown reasons caused the evacuation of neighboring apartment buildings on two consecutive nights near the corner of Pugh Street and Nittany Avenue this weekend.

Penn State faculty and students from many Centre County school districts gathered Friday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. by presenting speeches, poetry and a documentary to celebrate King's achievements.

Fraternity members are taking action against sexual assault.

With just over a month until the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, clubs are getting ready for the last few weeks of preparation. "Its crunch time," Thon overall chair Adam Duff (senior-finance) said.

Students, bar owners and bouncers reacted this weekend after two employees of the All American Rathskeller, 108 S. Pugh St., were ordered to stand trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Penn State student Salvador Peter Serrano. Christopher and Jason Rosengrant, the two bouncers charged in the incident, are scheduled to face a Feb. 9 arraignment.

As the Philadelphia Eagles battled the Carolina Panthers for a chance to go the Super Bowl in the NFC Championship last night, the legions of Eagles fans, like a green and white army, descended on local bars and parties.

For a game in which the home team was up 19-7 midway through the first half, there was an unusual amount of tension yesterday in the Bryce Jordan Center during the No. 8 Lady Lions' tilt with Illinois.

This year, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate allocated $2,100 to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, an increase of $100 from last year and more than three times the funding allocated in 2000.

SPORTS

On its home track, the Penn State women's indoor track team opened up its season with a statement, serving notice that they will be a team to be reckoned with in the Big Ten this season.

Logic says Penn State's men's track and field team should not have won its first meet of the 2004 season at home this weekend. That logic was laid to rest as the Nittany Lions won the U.S. Coaches Association Series Meet on Saturday.

When a coach says that he doesn't know what his team is going to do be doing in practice for the week, it could be a good thing or a bad thing.

The atmosphere and competition in Gym 2 of the Penn State Intramural Building intensified as a great deal was at stake in the latter rounds of the 2004 USA Olympic Table Tennis Trials.

Already the defending national champion, Penn State fencer Katarzyna Trzopek again produced big results, finishing fifth in the senior women's epee open in the U.S. Olympic Trial North American Cup Junior Open.

As five University of Illinois gymnasts hit their floor routines in a row, Luis Vargas could only stand and watch, and visualize his routine in his mind.

Although the Penn State women's gymnastics team bounced back after a sluggish start in its meet against Alabama on Friday night, the Lions' effort wasn't enough to clinch the season opener.

There aren't many better ways to follow a tough loss than by defeating the defending national champions the next night. Penn State did exactly that this weekend.

If the No.1 Penn State ACHA Div. I Icers had any lingering doubt following last weekend's back-to-back defeats at the hand of No. 7 Ohio University, Friday night's first period against No. 2 Rhode Island kicked the door open just a little wider.

The last time the Penn State wrestling team competed in the National Dual meet championships -- at the Bryce Jordan Center in 2001 -- it squared off against Oklahoma in the consolation round quarterfinals.

Everything was in place.
