Fencing

at U.S. Olympic Trials, today-Sunday San Jose, Calif.

In another step to earn points toward the U.S. National Team, three Penn State fencers are spending the weekend in San Jose, Calif.

Away from all the snow and cold, sophomore Katarzyna Trzopek and freshmen Sophia Hiss and Case Szarwark are set to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trial/North American Cup Junior Open.

This is the second part of the event as three different Penn State fencers competed last weekend.

Hiss will compete in the women's foil event while Trzopek and Szarwark will compete in the women's epee.

"It's great because they are able to compete," Penn State fencing assistant coach Wieslaw Glon said. "It will help them out later in the season."

While Trzopek is a defending national champion, it will be another opportunity for the two freshmen to build up their names. All the competitors will attmept to knock off Trzopek.

All three hope to get closer to the national team.

"Case has a very good chance and we expect her to do well over there," Glon said, "[Trzopek] has already established herself so hopefully she can do well."
