The university renewed the Framework to Foster Diversity after the old framework expired at the end of last semester. But was simply renewing and rearranging the wording the right move? Probably not.
The definitions of diversity vary from person to person, and the expectations each of those people have are as varied as the types of people attending this university. To simply write a few vague, rhetorical statements doesn't necessarily accomplish anything. We can read a mission statement about making the climate accommodating to students of all backgrounds. But what specifically can we do to make them feel welcome?
A student can read a goal that says Penn State will develop a "shared and inclusive understanding of diversity," but what does that mean?
The original framework was written five years ago. Now, with a small change to one of the statements, it has been reaffirmed. This is definitely a step in the right direction; but couldn't Penn State have researched more to find concrete goals that would produce real and understood results?
It is not to say that Penn State hasn't laid out some goals, such as hiring and recruiting more diverse faculty and students; those statements produce results, or at least encourage proactive hiring and recruiting practices. But saying the university strives to create a welcoming climate doesn't make students feel welcome.
The decision to renew the framework comes at an ironic time. Was there more research involved in these statements? Did the university, after five years, not find anything else that could be said or done to improve the diversity of the university? Obviously, the actions of a few irresponsible individuals cannot count for the entire student population, but it still sends a message to all who view Penn State outside and in.
When racial problems occur, people like to feel as if others are working toward something, not simply saying we want diversity. The question is, how do the institution, group or individual intend to deliver it?
It is commendable of the university to once again strive to become a better, more diverse one.
But as any goal that is set, results are truly what make people feel settled and appeased.
Penn State is about making life better. Show us how.
