This is in response to Philip Petter's letter concerning Penn State's lack of attendance at basketball games ("Homecourt advantage missing inside of BJC," Jan. 12).
I noticed this lack of attendance by checking the box scores on the Internet, and the reason there is little support is due to winter break.
The population of State College doubles when school is in session. When it's not, most of the students are at home enjoying the break.
The reason Penn State can pack a 100,000-seat stadium for football is because the games are on Saturday, and people come up for the day or the whole weekend. No one is going to make the trek to State College on a weeknight to catch a mediocre Big Ten matchup.
The only way for the Penn State basketball fanbase to increase is for the town of State College to grow, and that doesn't look like it's going to happen.
