NEWS

Despite the recent case of mad cow disease in Washington, area businesses, including independent farmers and corporate grocers, are not concerned with the threat of a decline in beef sales.

U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., announced his bid for re-election Friday morning in State College, saying his top priority would be protecting Pennsylvanians from terrorism.

Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers confirmed late last week the death of six individuals on westbound Interstate 80 after an accident Tuesday involving almost 50 vehicles

About a year ago Mike Hall had a small pocketknife confiscated after going through airport security.

Frigid temperatures greeted Nathan Wrye as he moved back to campus this weekend.

As everyone returns from break with new clothes, DVDs and other gifts from the holiday season, Penn State received a present worth $307.8 million.

Two employees of the All American Rathskeller, 108 S. Pugh St., are facing involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with the death of Penn State student Salvador Peter Serrano.

Starting this semester, all Penn State job applicants are required to undergo a criminal background check before being hired. Penn State is the first college in the state to execute a mandatory criminal record examination.

About 18,000 on-campus residents at Penn State campuses now have legal digital access to nearly half a million songs, thanks to a contract between the university and Napster.

Alpha Fire Co. responded to an automatic fire alarm at 1:50 p.m. yesterday at 252 E. Beaver Ave., where residents of Kappa Sigma fraternity notified firefighters of the odor of natural gas.

Fraser Street could someday be home to a new movie theater complex.

Two men robbed an employee of Chili's Bar and Grill, 139 S. Allen St., at 11:37 p.m. Saturday on the 400 block of South Fraser Street, the State College Police Department said. Police said the suspects approached the woman and threw her against a fence. They took her apron, which held the waitress' tip money she accrued during her shift. The suspects made off with about $100.

SPORTS

With just seconds remaining in the first half of Saturday's Penn State-Ohio State men's basketball matchup, Buckeyes guard Tony Stockman dribbled the ball, watching the clock wind down, his team holding possession and a one-point lead.

Giving her the benefit of the doubt, maybe senior guard Kelly Mazzante is trying to break the Big Ten career scoring record at home.

DeForrest Riley-Smith played in 10 games for Ed DeChellis' Nittany Lions in their non-conference slate. In five of those games, he played all 40 minutes, mainly at small forward.

How the mighty have fallen.

Penn State wide receivers coach Kenny Carter has left the team to accept a position as the running backs coach at Vanderbilt.

Before the semester break began, the Penn State men's basketball team was on a three-game losing streak and lacked the motivation that had carried them to a 3-1 record prior to the skid. The holiday season needed to bring the Nittany Lions good fortune before they headed into the conference schedule.

The end of December was not a fun time to be a Lady Lion.

Forgive Penn State wrestling coach Troy Sunderland if a sense of dreadful déjà vu overcame him four matches into his team's showdown with Lehigh on Jan 6.

Most coaches like to start a season with easy opponents to allow their players time to gel, but that's not the way the Penn State men's volleyball team started. In traveling to Hawaii to play in the Outrigger Invitational Tournament, Penn State faced Hawaii, defending national champion Lewis and also had an exhibition match against Manitoba. The Nittany Lions showed up to play two of the biggest powerhouses in the United States and a dynasty from Canada.

If the Penn State men's volleyball team qualifies for the Final Four in the two upcoming seasons, it will earn trips to Hawaii and California. But if the Nittany Lions qualify in 2006, they will have earned something even better -- the chance to compete for the national championship on their home court.

The final match of the season could not have been much tougher for the Penn State women's volleyball team.

The Penn State men's swimming and diving team was forced to move on without one of its key players, sophomore Willie Gordon, Saturday against North Carolina.

Not even a delay in the start of a game could slow down the No. 3 Penn State Ice Lions.

While the Carolina Panthers battled to fight off a last-second comeback in St. Louis Saturday afternoon, back in the Tar Heel State, the Penn State's women's swimming and diving team was trying to prevent losing a lead of its own.

On a few occasions, Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland has mentioned that some people felt she was making a mistake by having such a difficult non-conference schedule.

They are not the Three Musketeers or the Three Amigos, but they could be dubbed "The Three Seniors" when all is said and done -- the three men that will be the metaphorical backbone for the No. 5-ranked Penn State men's gymnastics team this season.

AMHERST, Mass. -- Lady Icers coach Chris Whittemore, rarely at a loss for words, was left shaking his head.

Another very successful fall sports season has propelled Penn State into seventh place in the 11th Annual Directors' Cup

A pair of Penn Staters have accepted invitations to play in the inaugural Las Vegas All-American Classic where they will be coached by a former Nittany Lion gridiron standout.
